In the Leadership Spotlight below, Janet shares advice on work/life balance while running two companies, her key strengths that have made her successful, and what women can do to break the barriers and other people’s expectations.

What is your current role, company, and responsibilities?

I am known as the BS-to-Brilliance Master, Business coach, speaker, author and corporate trainer for my company – Janet Zaretsky (Empowered Women Enterprises, LLC). The underpinning of my business is to empower people and end the gender gap, both in pay and in influence in my lifetime.

I am also co-founder of the Impact Speaking Lab. We conduct speaking labs that develop people’s abilities to speak impactfully and be memorable as a speaker, presenter as well as in their roles in their career and life.

How would you describe your biggest accomplishments in your current role? What did you do to accomplish this?

I have spoken and worked with over 32,000 people over the past 23 plus years. I have empowered people to elevate their careers, make more money and be more satisfied. There are numerous amazing success stories that fulfill why I am here doing what I do. I have done 2 TEDX talks.

Given I changed careers successfully after 21 years as a registered nurse, that is one of my biggest personal accomplishments. To accomplish this, I got training and have continuously stayed in a training mindset, always learning and growing and inviting other people’s input and contribution.

Where does your passion come from in your business? What keeps you motivated to do what you do?

I think everyone has inherent power, amazing abilities and if they got out of the way whatever is in their way- if they know it or not, they would be wildly effective in the world. I am committed to helping them bridge the gap while being empowered.

I stay motivated because I see my clients produce awesome results and experience their own growth and accomplishments. Those moments are worth everything!

What key strengths have you developed to make you successful in your business?
  1. I am super confident and bold.
  2. I have the ability to hear what is in the background that my clients may not see, and when I can help them discover that which is in the background stopping them, they have life altering breakthroughs.
  3. I am a very impactful speaker
  4. I am great at training others.
  5. I write well, books, articles and workshops.

What is the biggest challenge in your industry at the moment? How do you face this challenge?

My biggest challenge is getting the word out. I work with a marketing coach and I still find it is challenging.

What was your ‘A-ha!’ moment? When did you realize this was the path you wanted to take?

I went to coach training school in 1995. I had a mentor coach who had me take a transformational program. It was in that program that I got to my bones that I wanted to spend my life giving other people access to their own gifts talents and brilliance. I have never looked back or regretted that decision for one minute!

How have you balanced your career with personal and family needs? What tips do you have for our readers?

Boundaries are a must for each of us. As a self-employed person, and even when I was working for a company, I trained my family and trained my co-workers and clients of the times I was available and when I was not. I learned to say no. That is a big thing that most people, especially women, need to learn to do. We, as women, think we need to be super-women and do everything— then we resent it. If you look at what others could do (that doesn’t require you specifically) give it away. When you say no, you leave the door open for others to step up, develop themselves and contribute. Also, you train others to interact with you so if you find you are not happy with how you are being treated, look to see how you have trained them to act that way, and start retraining them.

What is one piece of practical advice you would give to someone starting out in your business?

Get training. If you want to be a coach, for example, you need specific coach training. Coaching is not advice giving and the distinctions of coaching are important to get trained in. Also get a mentor or hire a coach to work with you. Invest in your training and invest in your development. And be willing to take risks!

What advice would you give to your younger self at the start of your career?

If I go all the way back to when I started in nursing- I would have gone to medical school- I would tell myself to break any traditions or what others think and go for what you want.

What has helped you get to where you are in your business and what advice would you have for others who want to set off in a similar direction?

Failure is not fatal. I often say fail fast, fail often, learn the lesson to be learned and move on.

What advice have you gotten that has helped you?

Listening is critical. Learning and developing the ability to listen to many sources has been invaluable.
